Flash Gilding with Mica Powders

Flash gilding is done by applying fine Mica Powders to a sized surface. This technique is an ideal application for Modellos as the adhesive patterns allow you to create very clean and crisp prints on even the most intricate designs. Modello Designs offers Mica Powders in 13 beautiful colors that can be used for this purpose.

This sample begins with 2 coats of Black Walnut Shimmered Suede (a metallic burnishing plaster from Blue Pearl Paints).

Nu-Antique Copper Mica Powder is mixed into a translucent glazing medium at a ratio of 1 part mica to 8 parts glazing medium.

It can be troweled over the surface with a soft rubber trowel or ragged on.

When thoroughly dry, apply a Modello pattern and burnish well.

Brush on a thin, even coat of Rolco Aquasize (for gilding) over the design area. To ensure 100% coverage, brush first in one direction and then the other. Finish by "laying off" the brush, meaning that you brush very lightly at the end to get the smoothest finish.

Allow the size to come "to tack", approximately 15-20 minutes.

For some added interest and variety you can drop in some small Tamise Flakes, such as these from the Variegated Spring Mix.

Burnish them down lightly with your fingertips.

The Flash Gilding process involves applying loose Mica Powder to the sized areas to simulate a metal leaf effect.

Transfer a small amount of powder into a shallow container and pick up some of the loose powder on a stencil brush. Tap off excess and apply to the desired area using a circular rubbing motion. Excess powder will fall away and become airborne, so be sure not to overload the brush and wearing a dust mask while using Mica Powders is highly recommended.

The Mica Powder colors used for this sample were Super Bronze, Super Copper and Aztec Gold.

Additional shading can be applied, if desired, with a dark brown acrylic paint or Aquacolor.

You can seal the entire area with Liberon Neutral wax applied thinly with cheesecloth, if desired, before removing the Modello.
